What is Double Glazing?

Double glazing typically involves putting two panes of glass together, with a sealed gap in between, to insulate your home from outside noise and unwanted seasonal heat/cold from coming in or out.

Out performing most of our competitors’ equivalent products, Nu-Eco’s exceptional double glazed units consist of two panes of 4mm glass, spaced 20mm apart, effectively forming a 28mm argon filled Insulated Glass Unit (IGU). By utilising high performance glass and glazing, we achieve U-Values of 1.5 (W/2mK) with our standard glass specification and can reduce noise by up to 80%. Varying glass options are also available to further improve/lower the u-value, reduce or increase the solar heat gain co-efficient (SHGC) and/or further improve noise reduction.
Most double glazed windows supplied in Melbourne still use the old inefficient double glazed units which have spacers as small as only 6mm. As noted above Nu-Eco’s range of double glazed uPVC windows use a minimum of 4mm glass both sides and a have a 20mm Argon Gas filled space to provide better thermal efficiency and noise reduction.

Features of our double glazing:

4mm Glass minimum both sides

What is uPVC?

Unplasticised poly vinyl chloride (uPVC) also commonly known as rigid PVC is used extensively in the building industry due to its durability and cost-efficient attributes. The combination of a product derived from salt (an abundant and renewable resource) and produced using very minimal energy, makes uPVC the eco-friendly choice in the building industry.
uPVC is not new to Australia! – Already used extensively throughout Australia in plumbing, electrical and general building products and as a window product has been used in Europe since the early 1940’s, and makes up approximately 90- 95 percent of residential windows sales in the United Kingdom, has grown to between 60- 70 percent in the USA and is now the fastest growing window product in Australia.

Frequently Asked Questions

Understanding the technology behind premium double glazed windows and doors.

Pricing depends on the number of openings, window styles, glass specification, and how complex the installation is. In Melbourne, fully installed uPVC double glazed windows typically range from $800 to $2,000 per window, with whole-home projects sitting between $15,000 and $40,000 depending on the size of the home and access requirements.

Nu-Eco sits at the premium end of this range because our products are manufactured by the UK’s largest uPVC supplier using the highest-grade profiles and European hardware. We don’t cut corners with thinner glass or narrow spacers. Every quote is based on a free on-site measure, so you’ll know exactly what your project costs before any work begins. We also offer green loan financing to make the investment more manageable.

Yes, and it addresses all three problems because they share the same root cause: poorly performing windows.

Condensation forms when warm, moist indoor air hits a cold surface. With single glazed windows, the glass gets cold enough to trigger moisture buildup, which feeds mould growth on frames, sills, and surrounding walls. Double glazing keeps the inner pane much closer to room temperature, so the glass rarely drops below the dew point. The result is dramatically less moisture on the glass and far less risk of mould developing around the window.

Draughts are a separate issue but equally common in older Melbourne homes. They happen when gaps open up in ageing frames, whether from timber shrinking, mechanical joins loosening, or seals deteriorating. Fully welded uPVC frames have no mechanical joints and no timber to warp, so there are simply no gaps for cold air to find its way through. If your current windows are foggy, damp, or letting cold air pour in on winter mornings, replacing them is one of the most effective single upgrades you can make to your home’s comfort.

The biggest difference is thermal performance. Aluminium is a metal, and metals conduct heat. In a Melbourne summer, aluminium frames transfer heat directly into your living spaces. In winter, they pull warmth out. That constant heat transfer is why aluminium-framed homes are often uncomfortable and expensive to heat and cool.

uPVC doesn’t conduct heat the way metal does. It’s a natural insulator, similar in principle to the plastic casing around electrical wiring. Our frames are also fully welded rather than mechanically joined, which means there are no gaps, no screws working loose over time, and no points where air can leak through. Aluminium frames are typically screwed or riveted together, and those joins become weak points for both air leakage and noise over the years. On top of that, uPVC never needs painting, won’t corrode in coastal air, and won’t rot the way timber does.

uPVC double glazed windows are significantly more secure than standard aluminium or timber windows. The protection works across three layers: the locking system, the frame construction, and the glass itself.

Nu-Eco windows use European-engineered multi-point locking hardware that secures the sash at several points around the frame, not just a single latch. This hardware meets the UK’s “Secure by Design” police accreditation, a standard that requires windows to resist sustained physical attack during independent testing. The frames are fully welded with internal steel reinforcement, which eliminates the weak mechanical joints that intruders typically target on older windows. And the sealed double glazed unit itself adds a further barrier. Two bonded panes of glass are far harder to breach than a single sheet, and even under heavy impact, the sealed construction holds the unit together rather than shattering into an easy entry point. Read more about how our security windows are engineered to protect your home.

Most Melbourne households save between 20% and 40% on heating and cooling costs after upgrading to uPVC double glazed windows. The exact figure depends on the size of your home, how many windows you replace, and what you’re replacing (single glazed aluminium will see the biggest improvement).

The savings come from two things working together. The sealed glass unit stops heat radiating through the glass, while the insulating uPVC frame stops heat conducting through the frame. With standard aluminium, your frame is actively working against your glass. It’s like insulating your walls but leaving the studs exposed. With uPVC, the whole window system is pulling in the same direction. Many of our customers tell us they notice the difference on their very first energy bill. For a deeper look at how the glass and frame specifications affect your home’s thermal performance, visit our energy efficient windows page.

Every Nu-Eco window and door is custom manufactured to your exact measurements, so there are no limitations on size or opening configuration. We offer Awning, Casement, Tilt and Turn, and Double Hung windows, plus French Doors, Sliding Patio Doors, Bi-Fold Doors, Front Doors, and Composite Doors.

We have a range of colour options include White, Cream, Anthracite Grey, Golden Oak, Rosewood, and other finishes designed to complement both modern and period homes. You can also choose between two frame profile styles. The chamfered profile has clean, angular lines that suit contemporary architecture, while the sculptured profile features softer, more decorative edges that work well on older homes. Our team will bring samples to your free measure and quote so you can see the colours and profiles against your own brickwork and interiors.

Very effective. Our double glazed windows reduce external noise by up to 80%, which is enough to turn a bedroom facing a main road into a genuinely quiet space. For context, the recommended noise level for sleeping is around 30 decibels, and our windows can reduce outside noise by up to 40 decibels. That’s the difference between hearing every truck brake and barely noticing traffic is there.

The key is the air gap between the two panes. Nu-Eco uses a 20mm spacer in our sealed units, which is significantly wider than the 6mm spacers still common across the industry. Sound waves lose energy as they cross that wider cavity, so by the time they reach the inner pane, most of the noise has been absorbed. For homes near train lines, flight paths, or particularly busy intersections, we also offer laminated acoustic glass with mismatched pane thicknesses. Using different glass thicknesses on each side disrupts sound wave resonance, which is especially effective against low-frequency rumble. Find out more about our soundproof window solutions.

Retrofit double glazing replaces the glass in your existing frames. The old single pane comes out and a sealed double glazed unit goes in, sometimes with modifications to the frame to accommodate the thicker glass. The trade-off is performance.

Your existing aluminium or timber frame stays in place, and that frame is often the weakest link. Aluminium conducts heat. Timber warps and develops gaps over time. Mechanical joins loosen. Retrofit improves the glass, but it doesn’t fix the frame. Full window replacement removes the old frame entirely and installs a complete system where the glass, frame, seals, and hardware are all engineered to work together. The result is noticeably better thermal efficiency, noise reduction, and airtightness. For most Melbourne homes with ageing windows, full replacement delivers a stronger return over the life of the product, especially when you factor in the zero maintenance and 20 to 35 year lifespan of uPVC.

A single room with a couple of windows is usually done in a day. A full home replacement, say 10 to 15 windows and a few doors, typically takes two to three days on site. Larger homes or properties with difficult access (upper storeys, narrow laneways, scaffold requirements) may take a little longer.

Every window is custom manufactured to your exact measurements before we arrive, so the on-site time is focused on careful removal of the old frames, precision fitting of the new ones, and finishing the reveals and seals. We work through the house one area at a time and clean up as we go. You won’t need to move out or clear rooms in advance. From your initial measure through to final sign-off, the same Nu-Eco team handles the entire job. No subcontractors, no handoffs.

Yes. Nu-Eco has partnered with Handypay to offer low-rate, flexible home improvement payment plans ranging from $2,000 to $50,000. You can choose weekly, fortnightly, or monthly repayments, and there are no early exit or early repayment fees.

Applying is straightforward and a quote won’t impact your credit score. To be eligible you need to be over 18, an Australian citizen or permanent resident, and in current employment. You can get started through our finance page or ask our team about it during your free measure and quote. It’s a practical way to start benefiting from better-performing windows now rather than waiting while your current windows keep driving up your energy bills.

All Nu-Eco windows and doors are backed by our product warranty covering frames, sealed glass units, and hardware. The uPVC profiles we use are manufactured by a supplier with over 45 years of production history, and they’ve been performing in the UK’s climate (which throws everything from coastal salt air to freezing winters at them) for decades.

In practical terms, high-quality uPVC double glazed windows have a service life of 20 to 35 years. The frames won’t rot, warp, corrode, or need repainting at any point during that time. The sealed glass units maintain their thermal and acoustic performance as long as the perimeter seal stays intact, which is exactly what our precision welding and quality control process is designed to ensure. Our team will walk you through the specific warranty terms during your free measure and quote.

Yes. International property data suggests that window replacement can return up to 70 to 80% of the installation cost in added home value at resale. In Melbourne’s market, where energy costs and sustainability are front of mind for buyers, double glazed homes attract stronger interest and sell faster.

Beyond the raw numbers, there’s a practical side to it. Buyers walking through an open home notice the difference immediately. Rooms feel quieter, more comfortable, and the windows look clean and modern (or heritage-appropriate, depending on the profile). Real estate agents consistently report that homes with double glazing sell more easily than comparable properties with old aluminium or timber windows. It’s also one of the few upgrades that improves your home’s energy star rating, which is an increasingly visible metric in Melbourne property listings.

Yes. Most standard like-for-like window replacements don’t require council permits, but heritage-overlaid properties are the exception. If your home has a heritage overlay, you’ll typically need a planning permit before replacing windows. The good news is that uPVC profiles can be manufactured to closely replicate the look of traditional timber joinery.

Nu-Eco offers both fully sculptured and fully chamfered profile styles. The sculptured ovolo finish mimics the decorative mouldings found on Victorian and Edwardian homes, while the chamfered profile suits more modern or mid-century properties. Heritage-appropriate colours like Cream, Golden Oak, and Rosewood help the new windows sit naturally against original brickwork and facades. We’ve completed heritage-sensitive installations across Melbourne’s inner suburbs and can advise on the best approach for your specific council requirements.

Melbourne’s climate swings from near-freezing winter mornings to 40-degree-plus summer days, sometimes in the same week. Standard windows can’t keep up with that range. Single glazed aluminium frames transfer heat in both directions, leaving your home cold in winter and stifling in summer regardless of how hard your heater or air conditioner is working.

uPVC double glazing handles both extremes because the insulation works in both directions. In winter, the sealed glass unit and insulating frame keep warmth inside your home instead of letting it radiate out through the glass. In summer, the Low-E coating on the glass reflects radiant heat before it enters, keeping your rooms noticeably cooler without relying as heavily on air conditioning. Our products carry AWA and WERS certification with U-values as low as 1.4 W/m2K (lower means better insulation), and the uPVC profiles themselves have been independently UV tested by the Allunga Exposure Laboratory to standards that exceed international benchmarks. They won’t crack, fade, or become brittle in Melbourne’s UV conditions. Learn more about how our energy efficient windows are built for Australian conditions.
